FAQ

Do you make everything in the shop?

Yes! I make all of the pottery myself in my backyard studio. I even mix most of my glazes from scratch.

You say your pottery is “earthenware” but what does that mean?

Earthenware basically means pottery that is fired to a relatively lower temperature than other types of ceramics like stoneware and porcelain. It’s often red in color, like terra cotta, and can have brighter colors in the clay and glazes. The first human potters made low fire earthenware work for millenia. I choose to work in earthenware range of clay because it shrinks less, warps less, and uses less energy to fire due to the lower temperatures reached.

Do the planters have holes in the bottom?

No, I find that rocks or gravel seem to drain fine in the shallow planters I make. My husband is the household plant person and he says that careful watering and observation of plants is key rather than holes in the bottom of the pot. I do recommend placing a coaster under the planter if it is on a delicate surface like finished wood.

What do you do with a pottery skull?

Whatever your little heart desires! The big skulls can fit a tea light candle inside. Both the big and little skulls are just awesome little decorations on their own, whether for Day of the Dead, Halloween, or year round!

What is a pourover cone?

It is a tool for making beautiful coffee with minimal equipment at home! This is an excellent guide from Blue Bottle Coffee, the first coffee company that ever served me a pourover.

What kinds of filters fit your pourover cones?

Hario filters size #2. It’s a Japanese company but you can buy them on Amazon. Chemex filters would also work in a bind.

Is your pottery dishwasher safe?

All of the pottery WITHOUT GOLD OR SILVER LUSTER can go in the dishwasher. I have washed my pottery in the dishwasher for years.

Pottery WITH GOLD OR SILVER LUSTER must be hand washed to keep its luster, like your grandma’s fine gold-rimmed china plates.

Can your pottery go in the microwave?

All of the pottery WITHOUT GOLD OR SILVER LUSTER can go in the microwave, but I find that handmade pottery often gets hot before the food does. I often prefer to use Pyrex or thin commercial dishes in the microwave.

Pottery WITH GOLD OR SILVER LUSTER cannot go in the microwave or you will watch sparks fly! Metal + microwave = bad idea. I learned this the hard way as a kid trying to melt Andes mints in the wrapper. Yikes.

Can I find your pottery in any stores?

Currently, no. But you can check out my pottery in person at the craft markets I attend several times a year and when I open my studio to the public each year for the Durham County Pottery Tour. Sign up for my email newsletter to hear when the next in-person event is happening!
